This trauma often leaves the voiceless in its wake, but Anderson illuminates the ways in which victims can heal and find a new voice. Anderson weaves her way through the stark landscape of lives, particularly her own, that were riddled with violence and abuse. Yet the poem ends with possibility and promise: the birth of a baby on the side of the road during the liberation from Holocaust concentration camps. She starts the collection with “in the name of love,” a poem that opens with a jarring image of a violent death: a young man’s head sliced in two by a machine (7). In truth, it is a collection that lyrically describes the terrible tragedies that can render victims mute. Anderson begins the collection of poems with the declaration that the work is “the story of a girl who lost her voice and wrote herself a new one” (1). These are the voices of the survivors who reached out to Anderson after her publication of the novel SPEAK, the survivors to whom she dedicates her work SHOUT. SHOUT by Laurie Halse Anderson is a poetic memoir written in response to the onslaught of voices unearthed by her work SPEAK. The following version of this book was used to create the guide: Halse Anderson, Laurie. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() Jenna has been surrounded by sports and jocks her entire life (her older brothers are an NFL quarterback and an MLB first baseman). The sex is hot, so it gets 2 stars, but that's the last time I spend 9.99 on a Burton book. I got to 20 pages from the end and realized that I had never once cared whether these two really ended up together-in part because there was never any doubt that they would. I found myself thinking: What? Who cares? he's attractive and funny and your family loves him, so what is the problem? And that's just the thing. In this case, it was honestly that she was secretly into music and not sports. ![]() A problem is being hurt by a sports figure in the past or something. Indeed, the time and place were only lightly sketched. I love me some historical vampire stories, but what we got here was vague. Based on my calculations, Miguel was born in the 16th century. My only quibble is that I wanted more vampire folklore and more about Miguel's previous life centuries. Ethan narrates this book in the first-person, and I loved his small-town, farm-boy persona. This book begins approximately 50 years BEFORE the final scene in book 1.Įthan and Miguel are an awesome couple. I was immediately drawn to the couple and wondered how they came to be. You'll remember that Ethan and Miguel were the small brown wolf and vampire who helped save Jonah's dad from a group of rabid shifters toward the end of that story. Plus, the romance factor was through the roof: knotting, mating, and blood bonding (blood, you all, so much blood). Miguel and Ethan are constantly on each other, licking, sucking, BITING. When coupled with the unpredictability and finality of death, however, this obsession with controlling time appears both misguided and futile.īradbury depicts multiple instances of death to underscore that there is no way to control or subdue it. The ever-ticking clock announcing every hour suggests the McClellan family’s tendency towards efficiency and control down to the minute. Related to this relentless dying, Bradbury emphasizes the omnipresence of time, structuring the story around the house’s automated announcement of each hour of the day. The reader encounters the death of the McClellan family, their dog, their city, and the house. Set in a post-apocalyptic landscape, this story presents death as pervasive. ![]() |
